We created Rotten Apples in late 2017 with one mission in mind: to build awareness for just how pervasive and systematic gender inequality was—and continues to be—in Hollywood.
Of course we’ve learned that gender inequity isn’t something that’s unique to Hollywood. It is absolutely something that is endemic to society at large.
While it was well and good to simply let people know that, sadly, there are rotten apples in the entertainment they love, knowledge is simply not enough.
That’s why our mission has shifted from that of awareness, to action.
Our hope is that if enough people begin to realize just how much discrimination and abuse women and other underrepresented minorities suffer at the hands of men, then maybe they’ll be motivated to take real tangible action.
And while it may seem obvious that everyone should be treated equally, unless it’s written into law, it is not a guarantee. You know, in the same way that we all know it’s wrong to kill, we also know that laws banning murder are pretty freaking useful.
So this brings about our new mission.
We believe that for women to be treated equitably in the Hollywood—but really in any industry—laws must be in place to ensure it.
That is why we are asking anyone who visits our site to help push for final ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
If you know what you’re watching, and you can see the imbalances that exist in the workplace, you might do something about it.
Even if that something is so obvious as making equal rights a protection guaranteed by the constitution.
Because evidently, that’s what it takes.
